What role does HPV play in the biology of HeLa cells?

Yes. HeLa cells contain HPV-18, a virus that causes cervical cancer.
When doctors took the original cancer cells from Henrietta Lacks, the HPV virus was already inside the cells—and part of its DNA had fused into the human genome.
These viral genes (called E6 and E7) make HeLa cells grow very fast and never die, which is why scientists still use them today.
1. E6 turns off the cell's natural “self-destruct” system (by blocking a protein called p53).
2. E7 turns off the “brake” that normally stops cells from growing out of control (a protein called pRb).
That’s how HPV helps HeLa cells stay alive and divide forever in the lab.

What is the recommended storage temperature for Hela cells?

Long-term storage:
Store cryopreserved HeLa cells in the liquid nitrogen vapor phase (–150°C to –196°C). This ensures cell viability and genetic stability over time.

Short-term (temporary):
If liquid nitrogen is not immediately available, cells may be kept in a –80°C freezer for a few days, but this is not recommended for long-term storage, as it can compromise viability.
